The San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau Women are pleased to announce the availability of the 2008 Farm Bureau Women’s scholarships. Qualified recipients can apply to receive $500 to further his or her education at a university, community college or trade school.

To qualify for this scholarship, one must be a member, a dependent or child/grandchild of a member of the San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau or the San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau Women, in good standing, since September of the previous year prior to the application; or a member for four years of either a San Luis Obispo County 4-H or a San Luis Obispo County Future Farmers of America; or a college student who graduated from a San Luis Obispo County high school and for at least two years has been enrolled in an agriculturally-related major.

Funds for the scholarship are raised mainly through the sale of straw brooms, vintage and new aprons and See’s Candy. The women also hand-mix a “just-add-water” bean soup mix that is a hit countywide.

The Farm Bureau Women also support youth activities, the Women’s Shelter and Achievement House. You will find them at the California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles, advocating for agriculture and selling their wares. Farm Bureau Women meet on the second Monday of each month, except July and August, alternating between North and South County. Meetings are at lunch and feature informational programs.

Inquiries regarding the 2009 San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau Women’s Scholarship can be made at any San Luis Obispo County High School or the San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau office at 543-3654.

SLO YF&R is pleased to announce they will be awarding one scholarship of $500 to graduating high school seniors in San Luis Obispo County that plan to continue their agriculture education.

The purpose of the scholarship is to promote agriculture education in the county by honoring students with interest in the issues agriculture faces. The scholarship’s qualifications are based on the applicant’s previous involvement in agriculture and current knowledge of agriculture issues in the county.

By providing this scholarship, YF&R's goal is to help local high school students enhance their awareness of issues that directly affect the future of agriculture - not just on a local level, but on a state and national level.

At the same time we are sending a message to the community that we are an organization that believes in the importance of securing the future of agriculture at the local level.

Scholarship applications have been sent directly to San Luis Obispo County high schools and distributed to the agriculture teachers. Contact Dan Royer, SLO YF&R Education and Outreach Chairman, at sloyfr@hotmail.com for more informaiton.
