Cattlemen and Farmers Celebrate Agriculture

Cattlemen and farmers gathered at the Mid-State Fair to celebrate agriculture and honor the achievements of local farmers and ranchers. The 22nd annual Cattlemen and Farmers’ Day events featured farm and ranch presentations including, cow dog and ranch horse demonstrations. Afternoon award presentations included: the "Agriculture in the Classroom" Award, USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant and JB Dewar Tractor Restoration Award. Evening awards included: Native Tree stewardship, Cattleman of the Year, CattleWoman of the Year and Agriculturalist of the Year. Barbecue lunch and dinner was prepared by the Farm Bureau and Cattlemen’s Associations. 

Schedule of Events July 24, 2008

  • 8:30 a.m. Cow Dog Trials – Equestrian Center
  • 9 a.m. Commercial Cattle Pens Judging
  • 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Barbecue Lunch
  • 12:45 p.m. Presentations:

     “Agriculture in the Classroom Teacher of the Year” Award, Winners of the JB Dewar Tractor Restoration Competition, Native Tree Stewardship Award

  • 1 p.m. Ranch Horse Class – Equestrian Center
  • 3 p.m. Industrial Arts Auction – Livestock Pavilion
  • 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. Social Hour
  • 5 p.m. Barbecue Steak Dinner
  • 6:45 p.m. Presentation of Awards:

    Cattlemen of the Year, Cattlewoman of the Year and Agriculturalist of the Year.

Agriculturalist of the Year - Mike Cavaletto

San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau is proud to announce Mr. Mike Cavaletto as the 2007 recipient of the Agriculturist of the Year award. South County citrus and avocado grower, Cavaletto was selected to receive SLO Co. Farm Bureau’s highest honor in appreciation to his unwavering support of the agriculture community. Established in 1988, the Agriculturist of the Year award serves to honor SLO County Farm Bureau members for their dedicated service toward the betterment of the agricultural community. Cattlemen of the Year - Roger Miller

San Luis Obispo County Cattlemen’s Association is very proud to honor Mr. Roger Miller as the Cattleman of the Year. Miller was born and raised in Parkfield, CA. by his parents Alice and Raymond Miller. His mother Alice was a past Cowbelle of the Year and his father Raymond a past Cattleman of the Year, it is easy to see that the cattle industry and the community have been positively impacted by the Miller Family.  Download Media Release.pdf

CattleWoman of the Year - Alberta Lewis

San Luis Obispo County CattleWomen’s Association is very proud to honor Mrs. Alberta Lewis as their CattleWoman of the Year. Alberta joined CowBelles, now CattleWomen, one year after the organization was formed in San Luis Obispo County. She is one of the original CowBelle trail riders and she worked very hard to get an annual ride started. She has been involved with all aspects of the organization from helping with beef promotion, working at the mid-state fair booth and attending the State CattleWomen's Convention.
