San Luis Obispo Young Farmers and Ranchers (SLO YF&R) have set the date for their second annual Bounty of the County dinner and live auction. Special keynote speaker, George Gomes, past California Farm Bureau Federation administrator and current undersecretary for the California Department of Food and Agriculture will talk on the importance of youth in agriculture. The event will again be held at the world-famous Madonna Inn. Past attendees have included California Farm Bureau Federation Board members, agriculture industry leaders and local agriculture supporters.
Auction items from local agriculture businesses will be featured. Items include produce donations from local farmers, local winery packages and weekend getaways, including a deep sea fishing trip. SLO YF&R members are also pitching in, donating a homemade quilt, ten bales of hay and an authentic teepee. Olivia Gonzales, SLO YF&R secretary and co-coordinator for the event, expressed her enthusiasm: “Our main goal is to support agriculture in this county. Donors will be recognized at YF&R events this year, and in the Farmer and Rancher Magazine, as official sponsors.”
Proceeds from the event will go towards the SLO YF&R’s 2007-2008 goal of emphasizing education. Funds will support local agriculture student scholarships, an agriculture program makeover competition and Food Check-Out Week. “We have set some very high standards for our members this year,” said SLO YF&R vice president Shannon Kelley, who is also coordinating the evening, “We’re looking forward to seeing how much of a positive impact we will have this year”.
This year’s event will showcase the SLO YF&R as the 2007 California Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee of the Year. This prestigious award recognizes one California committee each year that exemplifies promotion of Farm Bureau and an active support of the goals and policies of both the county and state organization. Community service, member participation and leadership development are key aspects of this award.
Tickets include a full course steak or chicken dinner, cocktails and wine.
